21.10.2025: Marcello Ammirati (Univ. Padua): Precision Phenotyping for Enhanced Root Vigor in Sugar Beet, HS 31.11, Institut für Biologie, Bereich Pflanzenwissenschaften, Schubertstraße 51, 17:00 Uhr
The identification of genotypes with favorable physiological and biochemical traits is fundamental for the advancement of crop breeding programs. In this study, variability among F3 sugar beet families was explored through a multi-trait approach aimed at validating non-destructive methods for phenotyping. Key parameters included leaf pigment content (anthocyanins and flavonols), elemental composition (assessed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and canopy cover. Statistical analyses, including variance testing and comparisons of family means, confirmed the presence of significant phenotypic diversity across families.
Identification of the relationship between Root vigor and Seed vigor for developing improved seed quality tests and for breeding programs aimed at optimizing early seedling establishment and resource acquisition. The observed variability highlights the genetic potential within the studied population and provides a basis for selecting genotypes with desirable features, while reducing reliance on destructive or labor-intensive assays. These findings demonstrate the utility of integrating portable sensors and high-throughput tools into breeding pipelines, supporting efficient, sustainable, and large-scale evaluation of plant material.
