02.10.2019: Prof. Harold ZAKON (Austin): Molecular Evolution of Electric Fish: a case study in parallel evolution, HS 02.11, Institut für Biologie, Bereich für Zoologie, Universitätsplatz 2, 13:15 Uhr.
Weakly electric fish have evolved electric organs that generate electric fields, sensory cells for detecting those fields, and novel brain regions for producing and processing electric signals. They have evolved independently in Africa and South America and thus represent a unique model system to study convergent evolution of novel structures. This seminar will focus on changes in gene expression underlying the evolution of electric organs, a structure that fascinated scientists including Humboldt and Darwin.
